Child of Samuel Joseph Cones

There are so many of these same pictures going around on the internet I want to note that we do have scans of originals or copies given to us by various descendants for a lot of these same photos, but it is hard to tell any more what came from where. So I am also going to note family tree's from Ancestry.com as an other resource to some of these and other pictures, even though we do have our own individual copy. This away all original owners are getting the credit they deserve for sharing their pictures. :)

Child of Samuel Joseph Cones

YES!!!
We were lucky to land an awesome resource HIT - from an other descendant of Samuel Joseph Cones, children. (We also descend from one of Sameul's children) This descendant's father whom passed in the last two years at the age of 101, had very few pictures remaining of Samuel Joseph Cones, his wife and son John Gregg Cones (1823-1917). These pictures you see below are copies of the actual pictures that this descendant had in posession.

Now we were contacted on our FindGrave page by a gentleman who has albums of some of Samuel Joseph Cones children. Unfortunately, we never heard back from the gentleman that contacted us. We do hope that he is ok and we also hope to hear from him again. If this is you, please do contact us as we would love to hear from you. :)

These pictures are one of few remaining pictures left of these precious ancestors. You are welcome to save these pictures for your tree or album. PLEASE Out of respect to our blog and the descendant who gave these pictures to us, DO NOT credit yourself as the original owner!
These pictures are copyright of our blog owner and the descendant we recieved these pictures from. Please credit our blog as your resource to these pictures. Thank you!

***  If you have any pictures to share we would love to include them in our album and in fact we are hunting for pictures of our past descendants. Any picture submitted will always be credited back to the orginal owner.  ***

Mystery Woman Possibly Solved! - Sarah Myers

Section 19 - Crown Hill Cemetery ----- MYSTERY!

We recently ran in to a mystery when we were out checking and verifying more information. We know that Cora Frances, daughter of William and Margaret died when she was 4. According to Crown Hill Cemetery Archives, she was buried next to William Washington and Margaret Cones. However several things prompted me to dig a little deeper for some answers.

Like:
  • Cora Frances was born between 1869-1871. She could not be buried at Crown Hill in 1907.
  • Cemetery Records indicate that Cora is sharing a crypt with (one) Sarah Myers. Who is she? Why is she sharing a crypt?
  • The date of this Sarah Myers has to be of an older female, as old as William's Mother. Could it possibly be Margaret's mother or relation? Is so how could Myers be her last name if Bayes is Margaret's last name?

to explain further for a period of time there was no headstone next to Williams Headstone, Just a space and then William's son-in-law and his daughter.  Upon a recent visit, now their is an old headstone that reads Sarah Myers.  (Wow, where did that thing come from?) So many questions with no answers... (dig deeper)...

Long story short, upon checking records and digging much deeper, I am led to believe that Sarah Myers is indeed Margaret Henrietta Bayes Mother! After further checking and learning from a genealogist friend, some times the records of the Census can be recorded with the surname being incorrectly noted.  Looking at the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, I see Margaret noted as Bayes and Myers, along side of her is the presumed mother and father. Both are listed as Jacob Myers-Bayes, Sarah Myers-Bayes-Rogers. The dates indicate that exact date we have for both Margaret and year of Sarah Myers below. So this must be Margaret's mother buried next to them in Crown Hill, section 19. This would explain partial why Cora is sharing a crypt with a Sarah Myers, (possibly her grandmother).

However it does not explain the why? When William W. is noted of being fairly wealthy and could very well buy a plot for his 4 year old. It also does not explain the date archived at Crown Hill noting burial in October 1907. The only logical explanation to this is that there was a body exhumed and reburied.

Resources leading me to believe that Sarah could in fact be Margaret's mother.

  • Sarah Rogers is the noted name of Margarets mother
  • 1860 U.S. Federal Census
  • Records Indicate Margaet, Sarah and Jacob (Mother and Father of Margaret) having the last names noted Bayes/Rogers/Myers.

Constantine descends from Jacob and Louise (Stillwell) Cones.

Headstone reads:

Charles B. Cones
April 15, 1863 - May 4, 1890.

(The best time to probably get a picture of this headstone is when the sun is setting more in the evening where the sun is on the headstone. Unfortunately this day we were there early. I will try another day to get a better image.)

The headstone of Sarah Myers is a mystery we just stumbled on as we continue our work on the Cones Family Book. Apparently, according to Crown Hill Cemetery records,
Cora Frances Cones, the fourth child to William and Margaret Cones, she is in the same crypt as this Sarah Myers. So they are sharing this grave according to the Cemetery Records. However, the information has to be some what inaccurate being that
Cora Frances was born some time between 1869-1871 and she died at the age of 4.

Crown Hill records also indicate that Cora was buried on Oct. 11, 1907, which has to be none other then an exhuming or re*burial date. Why or how? We do not know.
  • Who is this Sarah Myers and where does she fit in the Cones family?
  • Why is she sharing this grave with Cora Frances Cones?
Notice the date on Sarah Myers is well before William Washington was born. How does Sarah Myers fit in to this Cones Family? If you have any information on this, we would like to hear from you. Please comment under this post or message us at the side of this website.  Thank you.

UPDATE:

In working hard on this mystery, our search has led us to believe that Sarah Myers IS the Mother to Margaret Henrietta (Bayes) Cones.

However, this still has not answered the question: Why was Cora buried in the same crypt with Sarah Myers? Nor does this confirm or explain the dates given, that we presume to be the exhume or re*burial date that Crown Hill Cemetery has indicated in their records.

Cones in
 Bridgford Memorial Cemetery

Samuel Cones                                                 Sarah Cones

Interesting updated pictures and more information.

This next set and top two headstones are of Samuel J. Cones. The first picture of Samuel is sideway for the reason that it shows you behind the headstone a small marker that says S. C. All of the headstones have a small marker behind the bigger headstone but Samuel's is the only one you can actually see the S. C.

The next two pictures below: The left one is Sara Cones and the right one is all of the Cones that are buried in the Bridgford Memorial Cemetery.

Two of the headstones are knocked over. The one closest to Sarah is Michael Sylvester Cones and the one by the tree which I actually did a close up below, is Gracie.
Again Gracie is the one by the tree. Unfortunately, the tree is about to lay Gracie's headstone over on it's side. (Her headstone close up is at the bottom of this post.)

The interesting thing about the above middle set of pictures they are more bold then the first above set of picture. Details and Names are more clear. I have heard all kinds of tales and mysteries on this cemetery and I am beginning to understand the myths a little.

Now, Gracie is the bottom two pictures, and she is over by the tree. Her headstone is beginning to tilt towards the side. Most of the headstones are beginning to become hard to read and or are un-readable (if that is even a word - haha). I will be going back up Saturday with a rather large paper and black crayon to see if I can get any inscription off of any of the headstones. Probably not much but it is worth the try.

Crown Hill Cemetery - Indiana (Mausoleum Map)

I am adding this because not to many people realize there is a Mausoleum Map. I also know the last time I went in the office the lady got me close but as you can see in the marking she was a tad off. Lol. The cemetery site has archives where you can pull up your loved ones location and just look at this map to help guide you there.

 (see the attached links below)

Community Mausoleum Map

The Mausoleum Map above (in purple) actually shows you the
accurate location to Tressie Onie Cones and her then
husband William C. Kirk.

(notice the lady sent me passed the location of Tressie, I X it out.)

I linked the Cemetery Map to this site above. There is no link to the Mausoleum Map.
To get a map of Mausoleum you will need to go inside and ask for a map. Or you can click the picture above and print. If I can merge this in to a PDF I will.
But for now this is what I have that can at least help get you started.
